He is a member of the Institute of Medicine (IOM) Food and Nutrition Board. He has been a senior advisor to maternal-child community nutrition programs as well as household food security measurement projects funded by WHO, PAHO, UNICEF, FAO, UNESCO, UNDP, CDC, USDA, USAID, The World Bank, the Gates Foundation, and the Governments of Mexico, Brazil, and Colombia.

Rafael Escamilla was born in la Libertad, El Salvador.

He received training in the visual arts at the National Center of the Arts (CENAR) and studied architectural drawing at the national University of El Salvador (UES).

In 1980, due to the Salvadoran Civil War, Escamilla sought refuge first in Guatemala and then in Oaxaca, in southern Mexico. Escamilla appreciated intuitively and quickly internalized new landscapes, colors and indigenous artistic traditions in each place he sojourned. By the mid-1980s, he took up residence Los Angeles, where visual memory remains an important element of his artwork.

Rafael Escamilla is an avid reader and very familiar with the world’s great artistic traditions. He is fluent in current trends in the painterly and the other arts as evidenced in his wide range of work.

Rafael Escamilla, PhD, PT, is an accomplished collegiate athlete and National powerlifting champion who at 179 pound bodyweight performed in competition a full squat of just under 650 pounds, a deadlift of 630 pounds, and a bench press of 400 pounds. Dr. Rafael Escamilla used his experience and knowledge of sports biomechanics to enhance athletic performance and minimize injuries. Throughout his career, he has shared his knowledge of physical therapy and biomechanics as a professor at top schools such as Duke University, California State Polytechnic University, and California State University, Sacramento. His research has been published widely and has served to further the science of sports biomechanics and sports medicine.
